The Accidental Pilgrims: Part Four

St. Francis is the patron saint of the country, not Assisi, so his Feast Day draws in the great and the good from across Italy - and there is nothing the italian officials like better than to put on the pomp and parade! After a hearty cooked breakfast, shared with the pilgrimage, Angela and Vik head out to observe the age old pageantry that marks the start of this very important day. The narrator is the very lovely Fr. Andre Cirino, leader of the pilgrim pack and erstwhile guide to our accidental pilgrims, having crossed paths with them at The Convent back in February.

The Accidental Pilgrims: Part Three

The two interpid pilgrims set off for their destination, whizzing through countryside and town, on a mission to tread new footprints on their quest for simple joy and spiritual enlightenment! Not sure where the Abba comes in, but all good journeys need a soundtrack, and the irony of Money, Money, Money seemed to fit well with the incongruent juxtaposition of the vow of Poverty made by Francis and the proliferation of expenses religious articles, spiritual tourist tat, pricey cafes and parade of posh cars and clothing. The chalice, by the way, on later enquiry was over ?2000. That girl has exquisite taste...but we were happy to have our wooden Tau crosses and our penny flights and packed lunches. You don't need money to appreciate the beauty and magical quality of Assisi. You just need a strong pair of shoes, a few weeks to spare and a lovely Friar to be your host! Keep tuned for our adventures with the Bishop and more... Will Angela find spiritual enlightenment? Will Vik develop a sense of direction? All will be revealed in next week's episode of...

Reservoir Dubbs

Our pal Angela came up the other weekend for a visit, with the lovely Pete. We decided to go for a walk on Sunday to the Queen's Head at Troutbeck. Luckily the weather held off long enough to get there and enjoy a well deserved pint or two and some yummy grub. On the way, we passed Dubbs Reservoir and were shocked to find a proliferation of Warning signs, from danger of getting your eyeball ripped out with a stray fishing line, to drowning in deep water, to death by electrocution, to, most surprisingly, danger of breeding Adders! (this is the Lake District!). It appears the countryside is not such a gentle place to be, but hey, that's what we like - a sense of danger and a feeling of living life on the edge...

The Accidental Pilgrims: Part Two

Here is the next episode of Vik and Angela's journey to Assisi. Tired after the excitement of the travel, teh two interpid pilgrims head out for an evening of eating, drinking and midnight sight-seeing in Pisa. They finally got back to the hotel at 4am, after taking a wrong turn and following the Via Di Francesco for 3 hours in the direction of Rome! Now that is what we call following in the footsteps of a saint...

The Accidental Pilgrims: Part One

For those of you who don't know the background story, Angela and I met whilst enclosed in a Poor Clare Convent for 40 days and nights. We had both been selected to take part in a BBC2 documentary, imaginatively called "The Convent". We met for the first time at the gates of the enclosure and, much to everyone's surprise, we hit it off immediately. Now, Angela and I come from very different walks of life, and probably would not have pegged each other as pals, but we share a common honesty and humour that cut through all divides. I left the enclosure absolutely sure that one of the greatest gifts of the experience was the lasting, enriching friendship we had made - a sister infact!. That was in February 2006. Since then, we have shared a strange year, including the revamping of our lives according to our Franciscan lessons and the survival of the television broadcast experience.

Far from being convert christians, we had and have a lot of questions. But, during our stay at Crossbush, we talked long and hard about our lives (ok, we were meant to be silent!), including the journey we were on. At one point, we had the pleasure of meeting Fr. Andre Cirino, a visiting Franciscan priest and we told him of our dream of renovating Angela's house in Tuscany and turning it into a retreat centre, and of our intention to one day travel to Assisi, to the birthplace of Francis and Clare, and that we would see him there. Apparently he didn't believe us!

We have shared every part of our journey, speaking daily on the phone. One day, in September, I telephoned Angela and said - "hey, how about we do that trip to Assisi". We were both broke and said "well, if we can do it on our little budget we will go...". We managed to get a flight form a local airport for a penny, and through a series of 'coincidences' found somewhere we could stay for donations (CEFID). Not only that, but we found out that the only flight we could get, was taking us into Assisi on the eve of the Feast of St Francis, about the most important time in the Franciscan/Assisi calendar! We emailed Andre and said "See you there!" and off we ventured, 2 accidental pilgrims of the heart. This is the first part of our journey...

I just love breaking down footage, no thinking too much and posting it really fast so I don't labour the process too much. I feels different and fresh and is a welcome break from that narrative structure I edit most of the time(atwork).
